A New Hope
A continuing discussion about war, competition and building effective military institutions...
I have decided to establish a substack newsletter for longer discussions about future warfare, technologies, leadership and military effectiveness as well as to have an alternate venue for my analysis about the war in Ukraine.
Of course, the current tumult with Twitter and the uncertainty about its future has influenced my decision. While I am hopeful that we can continue to use Twitter as a medium for debate, information and influence, I also wanted to ensure I had another place where I could share my thoughts.
So, here is my substack!
I have called it Future Doctrina - or ‘future learning’ in Latin - because the most effective institutions are those that possess a learning culture. Whether it is learning from our own personal mistakes, leading small scale after action reviews, or nurturing innovation and adaptation in organisations, learning about the future is an essential part of building effective military (and other) organisations.
The mission for me here is to provide information and analysis - hopefully in an enjoyable format - which can be used to underpin the intellectual preparation for future challenges by a wide variety military, national security, think tank, academic and government people.
So, over the coming weeks I will be experimenting with different kinds of content. I hope to receive feedback on quality and style to continuous improve the experience of reading Futura Doctrina.
Thank you for reading!
Mick Ryan
PS. Yes, I have shamelessly used the title for the original Star Wars movie. As you will see from my Twitter posts, and future writing here, I am a total science fiction nerd.
I'm glad if things go belly up on Twitter, we will still have the opportunity to view your analysis of the Russo Ukranian war.
Sir, are you on Mastodon? thanks.
