I think given the evets currently unfolding you should include in your classics section, Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, by William Shirer and The Proud Tower and The Guns of August, by Barbara Tuchman. The Shirer book will help people understand the processes of authoritarian takeover of government and the Tuchman books will illustrate the utter incompetence of which ruling classes are capable.

I like the Stephen King quotation describing books as "uniquely portable magic." I have to agree as reading certainly allow such remarkable things as time travel, mind melding, and acquiring journeyman understanding of diverse fields beyond what most are ever able to achieve credible proficiency in.

These feats can be done merely with broadsheets, some ink, and printing press - perhaps the simplest though most consequential of modern technologies that continues to evolve in the forms of production and distribution of communication in equally remarkable ways.
