Brilliant estimation of the situation from different perspectives. Thank you for that.

I would be happy, if you would also discuss considerations for the phase(s) after success or failure.

One thing about a large scale military campaign is that it generates a whole set of new circumstances that will require complete reanalysis after that campaign reaches its culmination. Hard to talk about an after until there is an after.

Contingency planning is a military necessity also to think through phases in their possible development to the end.

I think you better call up Rumsfeld and Bush for advice on that

Such excellent analysis once again Mick. Every journalist should read this before they report on the (hopefully) successful Ukrainian counter-offensive over the next 6 months.

Expand full comment

My bet is that the Ukrainian counteroffensive will begin May 6 or May 7, so that the Russians will be in retreat on their most important national/ military holiday on May 9th, when they celebrate victory in World War II. What a blow to their insane ambitions!

Pootie has always sold his war as a completion of WW II denazification. Whereas the West has seen it as a war a defense the principle of national territorial integrity established by WW II. Either way, it's WW II.2.

Are you a young person Kathleen? Do you not know that it has been the USA that has brought on this war? Why has NATO continued to expand eastward over the years and bring Ukraine into its orbit. For defense? Give me a break!

No country owns another country. Beginning with 2014, the elected governments of Ukraine have been begging Western countries for more help than we have been willing to give them to resist Russian aggression. I say that Putin is old; he thinks that he is still living in the 19th century and that Russia deserves to have an empire. Since 1945, international law says that every country has your right to territorial integrity.

NATO crept right up Russia’s ass. Ukraine is flat earth and not defendable in the long term. Ukraine wasn’t asking for help until the CIA helped ‘elect’ a Ukrainian government opposed to Russia.

This pleased Neocons who profit from endless, perpetual war.

You know who doesn’t profit? People like in this video:

There will no doubt be screams to the contrary but this piece stinks of AI compiling from top to bottom.

Yes, this smells of AI, I think I counted the use of the word ‘Therefore’ 6x.

Anyone who supports Ukraine trying to military ‘take back’ Russian-speaking Crimea is either insane, or gets sadist excitement over the prospect of massive bloodshed, human tragedy and trauma

How is my describing my experience over the last few years equivalent to making claim or an argument?

I did not doubt your description of your experience. I described my own experience. I also described the facts that 4 Internet companies, one of them gigantic and three others very large, offer accommodations for people whose eyes works the way mine do.

My goal was to encourage others not to be intimidated by your insistence that very few people's eyes work the way mine do.

There is a tremendous amount of research showing that readers overwhelming play prefer black letters on a white background. The reverse causes phenomenon. We call contrast sensitivity, which leads very quickly to eye fatigue. I’ve been a professor of graphic design for over 35 years, but obviously rather than taking a commenters opinion I offer you current web standards recommendation on this below. But I noticed that you seem to be compelled to comment on everybody’s comment and seem to like to argue. So I will not respond further than this.

NATO clearly doesn't want to humiliate Russia hence its not provided all the weapons Ukraine need. All this talk of an Ukrainian offensive is over blown, sure they'll pressure here and there, but the front lines are unlikely to move much this summer. For that to happen, either Ukraine needs modern fighters and a lot more armour and ammo, or Russia needs to grow a brain and learn to integrate it's forces (neither are likely in 2023).

Great essay…. BUT, repeat BUT….Don’t put white type on a black background for anything longer than 50 words. It’s exhausting to the eye. I had to stop reading, copy and paste your text into a notes app just to read it. I’m still “headlights blind.” —from a Professor of Graphic Design, Human Perception Systems and Semiotics.

I am not doubting your problems with white on black, but I consistently find white on black easier to read, and I almost always flip normal text to white on black for that reason.

Expand full comment

You must not read things much longer than a tweet or an Instagram caption then. What type on black leads to what we call contrast sensitivity and eye fatigue for an overwhelming number of respondents when tested.

But I also noticed that you like to comment on every other comment and clearly have an argumentative streak. You must have a very strong need to feel special.

Gee, I didn't question whether you described your visual preferences accurately, but you instantaneously doubted that I may be among "the very few" whose eyes seem to work differently.

I stumbled across the opportunity to read things white on black in Microsoft 365: I invite you to check out Settings > Accessibility > Contrast Themes.

I have been using this option for several years now, up to 10 hours a day. I don't like to read black on white for more than a minute or two, which feels to me like looking into the sun or car headlights.

Why would Microsoft 365 include this functionality if there weren't people who benefited by it? I also use a similar function on ancestry.com, newspapers.com, and Internet Archive (archive.org). Why would these popular sites offer this option if there weren't people who found it helpful?

Now I will share a gratuitous insight with you. I have run across many doctors (medical and otherwise) who do not take it well when people report that their research findings don't cover all situations.

The Russians have it seems invested a lot into deep lines of concrete and steel. If those lines can be breached in depth for relatively low cost then the effect on Russian morale could be significant

Expand full comment

You don't breach concrete and steel without heavy losses. At least, not its in depth. The Russkeys have proven to be bad on the offensive but they'll be fine dug in with their sir power and artillery.

There are a bunch of those:

CCC - Command Control and Communications

CCCI - Command Control Communication and Intelligence

CCC also means Combat Casualty Care which is another military activity where the Russians have apparently miserably failed. Case fatality rates approaching 100% do not engender confidence in those that put their lives at risk to advance tactical, operational, and strategic objectives.

Agreed PJ. The USA/CIA engineered a coup in 2014 and this sick outcome so predictable
